LigniSet®
LigniSet® is a new thermosetting biopolymer that can serve as a resin for performance composites.
Pioneering fully biobased composites
While containing more than 50% lignin, LigniSet® composites display competitive mechanical properties and, unlike most lignin-based products, they do not smell! They also display UV-resistance properties.
Obtained by the simple and energy-efficient mixing of lignin and biobased hardeners at ambient temperature, LigniSet® can then be blended with natural fibers or other reinforcing agents to form structural composites. This is achieved by shaping the mixed dough into its final form and cured at temperatures around 180°C, for example by hot pressing.
With LigniSet®, the aim is to replace widely utilized fossil-based resins such as polyesters and epoxies, while at the same time getting rid of their toxic precursors (for example Bisphenol A for epoxies). LigniSet® can also potentially replace other non-renewable structural materials such as aluminum (see our Traffic signs project), paving the way for fully bio-based products where usually only some of the fossil components are substituted.
